Between school bus pickups, sports practices all across the Marshall area, and packing lunches, early fall can feel like a sprint. When your family calendar fills up fast, your own health is usually the first thing to take a back seat.

Carving out time for yourself does not require hours at the gym. A focused half hour is all you need to clear your mind, boost your energy, and build strength.

You can fit in a quick workout by using a simple circuit that hits every muscle in 30 minutes. Moving from one exercise right into the next keeps your heart rate up without wasting time.

The 30-Minute Back-to-School Workout

Equipment Needed:

None — these are all bodyweight exercises. Bands or dumbbells can be used if desired.

Directions:

This workout is split into two blocks. Do this circuit-style, with no rest between exercises. Once you have completed all the exercises in block one, rest for 60 to 90 seconds, and repeat 2 more times. Then, do the same for block two.

Trainer Tip:

Don't feel bad about modifying your workout to match your fitness level. The best workout is the one you do.

BLOCK 1

Bodyweight squat demonstration

Bodyweight Squat (10 Reps)

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Sit back into your hips like you are sitting in a chair, then drive through your heels to stand tall.

push-ups demonstration

Wide Push-ups (10 Reps)

Place your hands flat on the floor a few inches wider than your shoulders, keeping your body in a straight line from your head to your heels. Bend your arms to slowly lower your chest toward the ground until you hover just above the floor. Push firmly through your palms to lift yourself back up to the starting position.

Optional Modification: Do the push-ups on your knees.

plank walks demonstration

Plank Walks (5 Reps Each Side)

Start in a push-up position. Keeping your feet anchored in place, step one hand out to the side and bring the other hand across to follow it.

russian twist demonstration

Russian Twist (10 Reps Each Side)

Sit on the floor with your knees bent, lean your upper body back slightly, and clasp your hands in front of your chest. Slowly turn your shoulders from side to side. Keep your chest lifted and your back straight the entire time so you avoid rounding your spine.

BLOCK 2

jump sqaut and reverse lunge demonstration

Lunge Jumps (10 Reps)

Step one foot forward and sink down until both knees are bent, keeping your upper body upright and your back knee hovering just above the floor.

Push through both feet to spring straight up into the air, switching the position of your front and back legs while you are off the ground. Land softly in this new stance, immediately dropping down to absorb the landing and spring smoothly into the next jump.

Optional Modification: Replace lunge jumps with reverse lunges

superman and bid dog demonstration

Supermans (10 Reps)

Lie on your stomach with your arms stretched out overhead. Lift your arms, chest, and legs a few inches off the floor at the same time, pausing briefly at the top like you are flying.

Slowly lower yourself back down to the ground with control before starting the next rep.

Optional Modification: Replace supermans with bird dogs (5 reps each side).

Bicycle crunch demonstration

Bicycle Crunch (10 Reps Each Side)

Lie on your back with your knees lifted and your hands resting gently behind your head. Bring one knee toward your chest while straightening your other leg out, simultaneously turning your upper body so your opposite elbow meets that knee. Smoothly switch sides in a steady pedaling rhythm.

sideplank demonstration

Side Plank Dips (10 Reps Each Side)

Lie on your side propped up on one elbow, lifting your hips so your body forms a straight diagonal line from your head to your feet. Slowly lower your bottom hip toward the floor without resting it on the ground. Press firmly through your arm and lift your hips back up to the starting position to complete the movement.

Optional Modification: Perform the plank dips from your knees.
