POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Youth Development Director and in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Marshall Area YMCA, the School Age Childcare Staff is responsible for working with a group of fifteen to thirty children in the After School Program and during School’s Out Camp Days. In addition he/she is to aid the Marshall Area YMCA in fulfilling our mission to instill the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility through programs and services that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Position requires a person with experience in after school programming or working with school age children.
  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Person must have a personality that reflects a love of children, can understand and meet their wide variety of needs, and is creative and spontaneous.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

After School Program
  1. Lead daily activities with a small group of children.
  2. Attending all staff training sessions and all staff meetings.
  3. Ensure the well-being and safety of all participants in the group. 
  4. Assist the Youth Development Director with large group activities and special events including field trips if scheduled. 
  5. Care for and maintain equipment, supplies and property used by the group. 
  6. Assist with set up and clean up before and after each scheduled shift day.
  7. Be responsible for daily sign-in and sign-out procedures.
  8. Assist children in finding and engaging in appropriate, values driven activities.
  9. Maintain positive relationships with after school program participants, parents, and YMCA staff. 
  10. Uphold policies and philosophy; use character development as a basis in working with both campers and other staff members. 
  11. Have complete knowledge of all emergency procedures to ensure the safety of the group.
  12. Assist Youth Development Director as requested in relation to Marshall Area YMCA.
  13. The candidate must be able to fulfill the above job requirements by purposefully and seamlessly challenging her/himself and others to accept and demonstrate the positive values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
School's Out Camp
  1. Lead activities with assigned group as indicated on the camp schedule from the Youth Development Director. 
  2. Attend all training sessions and all staff meetings. 
  3. Ensure the well-being and safety of all campers in the group. 
  4. Assist with large group activities and the Youth Development Director with special events, if scheduled. 
  5. Care for and maintain camp equipment, supplies and property used by the group.

  8. Maintain positive relationships with campers, parents, co-counselors, and other YMCA staff.

  11. Assist Youth Development Director as requested in relation to Marshall Area YMCA Camps.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Candidate must be able to move easily across a variety of indoor and outdoor terrain; participate in typical outdoor children’s games, sports and activities; watch and listen to the activities of a group of children; assist children with their homework; lift up to 50 pounds.

The effectiveness of the incumbents’ fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

  1. 1. Children are safe and having a positive experience. 
  2. Repeat enrollment of participants reflects a positive experience. 
  3. All equipment and supplies are cared for and used properly. 
  4. All administrative tasks are completed on a timely basis. 
  5. Completed evaluations reflect a positive and safe program experience. 
  6. Conduct of incumbent reflects values and goals of Marshall Area YMCA.
