As the ice finally disappears from our favorite fishing holes, we know everyone in Lyon County is itching to get back to the water.
May is National Water Safety Month, and here at the Marshall Area YMCA, we want to make sure our community stays safe.
Whether you’re heading to Camden State Park or just hanging out at the Y pool, these tips are for you.
1. Always Ask First
Teach your little ones that the water is a "grown-up-first" zone. They should always get verbal permission before heading toward the water.
This simple habit saves lives by ensuring an adult is always aware and ready to help.
2. The Buddy System is Best
In Marshall, we look out for one another! Never let your kids swim alone, even if they are confident swimmers.
Whether you are at the Y or a nearby lake, having a distraction-free "Water Watcher" is the best way to prevent accidents.
3. Keep Them Within Arm’s Reach
For our youngest neighbors, active supervision means staying close. If you’re at the pool, you should be close enough to reach out and touch your child at all times.
This applies to the bathtub at home, too!
4. Skip the Breath-Holding Games
It might seem like a fun challenge, but holding your breath for too long underwater is dangerous. Encourage kids to play other games instead. We want everyone to enjoy the water without the risk of "shallow water blackout."
5. Gear Up with Life Jackets
Kids who aren’t strong swimmers should wear a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in or near open water.
6. Reach or Throw—Don't Go
If you see a friend struggling, don’t jump in after them. Use the Y’s golden rule: Reach out with a pole or throw something that floats.
This keeps both people safe while you call for a lifeguard or adult.
