senior man and woman walking on an icy sidewalk

Let’s Stay on Our Feet This Season, Marshall.

Living here in Southwest Minnesota means we deal with two things that don’t mix well with balance: slippery sidewalks and wind that feels like it could knock you over!

Falls are a worry for many of us, especially when the temps drop. But staying steady on your feet isn't just about avoiding a spill on the ice. It’s about having the confidence to grab your groceries or head out to cheer on the Tigers without worrying about your footing.

Here is the best news: You don’t need to be a powerlifter to stay safe. A little strength goes a long way.

Build Your Wind-Fighting Muscles

When that wind howls down Main Street, you need a sturdy base. Strength training helps keep your joints stable so you can hold your ground.

Try to do these three times a week:

  • Legs: Simple squats (or sitting and standing from a sturdy chair) help you handle uneven ground.

  • Hips: Side leg lifts are great for stability.

  • Core: A strong core helps you catch yourself if you do hit a slick patch.

Make Balance a Daily Habit

Balance is a skill you can learn! Think of it like learning to drive on snow. It takes practice.

Try these  during your day:

  • Stand on one foot while waiting for your coffee to brew.

  • Walk heel-to-toe down your hallway (pretend you’re on a tightrope).

  • Practice shifting your weight smoothly, just like you have to do when navigating the slippery sidewalks in January.

Find Your Footing at the Marshall Area YMCA

Not sure where to start? We are right here on A Street, ready to help you stay upright. Our classes are designed for real people who just want to keep moving safely.

  • FOREVERWELL Fitness: We use chairs for stability, so you can focus on toning up without the fear of falling. Perfect for getting those legs ready for walking the local trails when spring hits!

  • Aqua Fitness: The pool is the safest place to build balance. If you wobble, you just make a splash! Plus, it’s always warm in the water, no matter what the wind chill is outside.

  • FOREVERWELL Fusion: Mix it up with cardio and stretching to keep your body agile and ready for anything.
