Stepping into your first group exercise class can feel intimidating. Whether you're a seasoned gym-goer or you're brand new to fitness, the thought of trying something new can bring up a lot of questions.
To help ease those first-timer jitters and give you the confidence to jump in, we've compiled and answered the 8 most common questions we get about our YMCA group exercise classes.
Where Do I Find the Group Exercise Schedule?
An updated group exercise schedule is always available on our website and our mobile app.
Download the App on the Apple App Store ›
Download the App on the Google Play Store ›
Our YMCA team members are always happy to help if you have any trouble accessing the schedule.
Do I Need to Sign Up for Group Exercise Classes Ahead of Time?
You do not need to sign up for classes ahead of time, but reservations are recommended.
This gives our instructors a heads up on how many people to expect during class, especially if equipment will be limited.
Reservations can easily be made on our website or mobile app in the Group Exercise section.
Do I Need to Bring Any Equipment to Class?
You do not need to bring your own equipment to any YMCA group exercise classes.
If you prefer to use your own yoga mat for floor work, you are welcome to bring it.
Otherwise, comfortable clothes, clean athletic shoes, and a water bottle are all you need!
How Early Should I Arrive Before Classes?
We recommend showing up to classes about 15 minutes before they start, especially if it's your first time.
This time will allow you to gather your equipment and meet the instructor. Let them know if it's your first time and if you have any injuries or limitations you'd like them to know about.
What If I'm Late to Class?
If you are late, do not let it stop you from coming to class!
If you arrive and class has already started, just walk around the perimeter of the class, grab any necessary equipment, and find an open spot.
Better late than never! 😁
Are There Any Classes Recommended for Beginners?
All YMCA classes include a Smart Start option. This is designed for you to ease your way into your routine.
All you do is let the instructor know before class that you'd like to try Smart Start. Instead of attending the whole class, you can leave partway through, and work up from there — judgement free!
If you are brand-new to fitness, you can also start with a FOREVERWELL class, designed to be gentler on muscles and joints.
Classes like F.I.T. and Power Strength allow you to work at your own pace and set your own weight.
Are All the Classes Included With My YMCA Membership?
Any class that you see on our Group Exercise schedule is free with your YMCA membership.
Your membership also includes access to virtual classes through Les Mills Virtual, available in the fitness studio.
BOGAFiT is a specialty fitness program that is not included in your YMCA membership. However, members can sign up for BOGAFiT sessions at a discounted price!
Can I Bring a Friend to Try Class With Me?
Building a stronger mind, body, and spirit together is what group exercise classes are all about, so guests are always welcome.
Non-members will have to purchase a guest pass, or you can use one of your three free annual guest passes that are included with your YMCA membership.
We hope that answering these 8 most asked questions gives you the comfort and confidence you need to take that first step.
