YMCA: Reflecting on and Celebrating 20 Years
Published: July 18, 2023
July 2003 was an exciting time as the YMCA opened its doors to the community. It was a soft opening with recently hired staff testing not only the facility, but all the systems, policies, and processes that go into operating a YMCA. Charter members were the main participants the first few months. A more formal open house took place in the fall, as the path was laid for two decades of programs and services.
A great part of my position is to see and hear stories of the impact the Y has had over the years. Health related stories are common, everything from recovery to improving overall quality of life. It is fun to watch kids progress from Child Watch to Swim Lessons, and Day Camp. Some take it full cycle, becoming lifeguards or camp counselors. Although health gets the headlines it is relationships which are the foundation. The Y is where friendships are created. These social connections are critical to overall wellness. It increases accountability, enhances mental health, and provides the needed support we all require. Lastly, it is so fulfilling to be able to serve everyone regardless of their economic status. The Y Partners Campaign, funded by the community, provides the dollars which allow partial scholarships so everyone can benefit from the Y.
This Fall we are planning to celebrate our history and accomplishments as we share our vision for the future of the Y. On October 15th we will begin 20 Days of Giveaways. Each visit to the Y will qualify as a raffle ticket for a variety of prizes. Daily activities will be scheduled toshowcase the breadth of programming. The area’s newest event for a cause, The YMCA Social, then continues the celebrations on Thursday, November 2. Guests will enjoy an evening of “Kinds & Queens” featuring casino games, silent auction, raffle, and more. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, July 18th with all proceeds supporting the YMCA. We are excited to celebrate all those who have had a vital role in the history of our Y with a brunch on November 3rd. The celebration will conclude with a weekend open house of the facility.
